South Africa: Zuma faces criticism and opposition over fathering a love-child

Weekly Report# 105

(31 January – 06 February 2010)

South Africa: South African president Jacob Zuma had fathered a girl, born on 8 October 2009, out of wedlock. On this scandal, Opposition parties and newspapers have accused Mr Zuma of setting a bad example in a country battling an epidemic of HIV and Aids. Even the religious parties have asked him to resign on this issue of fathering a love-child. But on the other hand ANC defends Zuma by saying that Zuma’s sex life has nothing to do with his policies. And ANC refers this issue as a private matter.

Discussion Questions

Is Zuma’s sex life a private metter?

Does Zuma’s action of fathering a love-child have any effect over his policies about HIV?

Is it such a huge issue that he was asked to resign from his designation?

  1. well an individual does have a private life but when he/she becomes leader of a nation or acquired some respectable position in a state then they have no private life as they represnt the whole nation, for that zuma is no exception. what he practices obviously would have a direct effect on his people.
its very ironic that on 1 hand he is leading a capmign for making people aware of HIV and on the other hand himself involve in shamful activities.
in my openion yes it is a big issue he should resign than he would be free to do whatever he wants to do as an individual definitly not appreciatable but atleast that would be his pesonal matter than...

  2. I agree with Sadia. It is a matter of morality. Even in secular states such an act is not accepted at this level.
